In a hard-fought match that came down to the wire, Marauder Women's Tennis team defeated Santa Monica College 5-4 in the conference opener for both schools. In doubles play Kristi Henderson and Jylian Brown lost 5-7, Naia Smithley and Brooke Faulk won 9-8 (7-3) in a tiebreak, and Sabrina Bulsombut and Gabriela Garcia won 8-0.
In singles play, Henderson won 7-5, 6-4, earning her first conference victory ever at No. 1 singles. Brown lost 1-6, 1-6, Smithley dropped a tough 3-set match 6-4, 3-6, 1-6, and Faulk lost 5-7, 3-6. Fortunately, the Marauders swept the No. 5 and No. 6 singles, with Bulsombut prevailing 7-6, (7-2), 6-2, and Garcia with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win.
Coach Webb stated, "We're obviously pleased with the win." Webb also noted, "In several matches today, we were behind or on the verge of being behind but fought through it to get the win. As I told the ladies, that is important as we begin the season because it gives us the confidence down the road to know we can find a way to win even though we may not be playing our best tennis."
The Marauders will see action next Tuesday on the road at Bakersfield.
