The Antelope Valley men's and women's cross country teams claimed the final qualifying spots at the WSC Cross Country Championships hosted by Moorpark College. Arroyo Vista Park was the site of this year's championships and marked the first time in 7 years that the Marauders advanced both men's and women's teams in the same calendar year. The top 7 women's teams would advance, and the Lady Marauders finished in the 7th position. Regina Kiminya led the team scoring for the third straight race as she placed 20th out of 54 entries and was followed by Rosa Aquiano, Vanessa Pena, Anahi Machado, and Brianna Dominguez. Glendale College took first place team honors.
On the men's side, the top 8 teams would advance to regionals in two weeks at Woodward Park in Fresno, CA. And just like the women, the men grabbed the last spot in 8th place, extending their season for two more weeks. Bobby Reynoso continued his season owning the number one spot but was challenged by Timothy Moreno, who finished a scat 2 seconds behind Reynoso. Kai Smithley, Jesus Flores, Richard Rose, Joe Lopez, Joseph Santiago, and Alan Arriaga rounded out the team finishers. Moorpark scored a one-point win over Bakersfield for the men's team title.
"I'm really happy for the young men and women today," commented head coach Tony Veney. Coach Carlos and I had hoped we could be 6th or 7th on the women's side and 7th or 8th on the men's."
The women were without runner Wynter Wilson, which bodes well for a strong team finish heading into regionals. The Regional Finals will be held November 4th at the Kern County Soccer Park in Bakersfield. The women's 5k starts at 10 am, followed by the men's 4 mile race at 11 am.
