THEOLOGIDY NAMED TO ALL SO CAL TEAM, MARAUDER WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HEADED TO STATE
IRVINE - Marauder cross country head coach Mark Covert knew what his women's team was capable of; to make the state meet.
He was right.
Led by Mariah Theologidy, who finished 10th in the Southern California Championships at Irvine Park, AVC is headed back to the state meet in two weeks in Fresno.
Theologidy, earned herself a spot on the All-SoCal Team, with a time of 19:05.54. She had the fastest time of any other freshman, other than Cuesta College's Leza Cassidy who ran 18:53.30 to finish fifth.
"She (Theologidy) ran very well today. She ran better today than she has in the past couple of meets," said Covert. "Her goal is to get in the top 10 at state and I think it's very doable."
Covert, who is in his final year of coaching, said he hopes that his final season will result in a top 20 finish at the state meet.
As a team, the Marauders finished 16th overall. Glendale College, as expected, blew away the field and won the meet. The Vaqueros had six runners place in the top 20, including a second, third and eighth place finish.
AVC's Carolina Gonzalez probably ran her best race of the season after her 24th place overall finish and a time of 19:37.53. Last year's All-American, who has been plagued by injuries dating back to last track season, finished in 20:36.47. Currently she is battling a foot injury.
"The fact that she (Beck) is running is remarkable. We're lucky she decided to suck it up and run," Covert said. "It was a really big run for her (Gonzalez). I really think she more in her. I really think we can get in the top 20 (at state)."
Covert also credits Brroke Wiggs (25:26.10) and Danie Lafayette (25:47.88) as helping the Marauders get to state, as there are 18 teams chosen from Southern California.
"What goes on in September and October doesn't mean a whole lot," Covert said. "It matters the last couple of races. I thought all the girls did a very good job today. It really meant a lot to me to get the team to state in my last season."
