KLUNDT FIRST EVER MARAUDER WOMEN'S GOLFER TO MAKE STATE
CHINO HILLS - Michaela Klundt did something this week no other women's golfer in AVC history has ever done; make it to the California State Championships.
Klundt shot an impressive round of 75 on Sunday at the Southern California Regional Championship, which was the second best round of Day 1 of competition. Only Santa Barbara City College's Carolin Chang shot better with a 73.
Klundt didn't shoot as weil on Day 2 on Monday with a disappointing 88, however, her combined score was just enough to get her into the State Championships. Chang finished with a 71 to top the leader board.
"Being the first woman in (school) history to go to state is not something that crossed my mind until my coach (George Fetters) actually told me," Klundt said. "It's very exciting to know I'm the first to achieve in hopes that it might inspire other people. Overall the feeling of going to state is so surreal I still can't even fathom the idea. After never making it to the second round of CIF during high school this is something that definitely makes up for it."
Klundt finsihed 11th overall with a combined score of 163. Chang finished with a combined score of 144 and teammate Vanessa Watkins was second with a 150.
"The first day I was in a zone. I owe a lot of that round to my mental game," Klundt said. "I stayed in the moment and put the pressure on myself. The second day I had back spasms. It was a little hard to rotate my body when I swung, but it wasn't my back that caused the bad day. It was just an off day physically and mentally."
However, Klundt has proven all season she can compete with any golfer in the state. She shot a personal best 67 at the Western State Conference championships, actually defeating all the golfers on the second day including Chang. She finished third overall at the match.
The State Championships will be on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 13-14, at the Morro Bay Golf Course.
