VENTURA - Deja Smith scored a team-high 19 points and Aniyah Terry added 12 points and eight rebounds, but it was not enough as Ventura was able to hold off the Marauder women's basketball team, 53-50, in the semifinals of the 8th Annual Ventura College-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament.
AVC will face a familiar foe in LA Valley, which lost in a thriller to Mt. San Jacinto in the other semifinal game, for third place.
Shantanel Bivens only attempted five field goals but still collected 10 rebounds. She was plagued with foul trouble in which she played limited minutes.
AVC's defense held the Pirates to only 29 percent shooting, although Ventura doubled the Marauders in free throw attempts which was the difference in the game. The Pirates held a huge advantange in bench points, outscoring AVC, 23-2.
