VISALIA - Deja Smith scored a team-high 21 points, but unfortunately is was not enough as the Marauder women's basketball team lost 63-58, to Foothill College at the Gilcrest Tournament hosted by College of the Sequoias Saturday morning.
The Marauders (3-7) shot one of their better games of the season finishing the game 11-of-21 from 3-point range, including five from Makaela Manson (17 points) and three from Brieanna Perkins (11 points).
The Owls (7-5) outscored AVC 17-6 in the first quarter and the Marauders couldn't respond.
"Defensively we did some good things out of their zone to match up with their size. We did a good job doubling the ball and making them take tough shots," AVC head coach Barry Green said. "We had great production from Makaela and Deja. We were able to keep it close, but unfortunately we weren't able to make a play in the last minute."
AVC was able to eventually tie the score with 3:04 remaining in the game following Smith's second 3-pointer of the game, but Foothill closed the final minutes on an 8-3 run to seal the victory.
The Marauders, which outscored the Owls 22-14 in the final quarter, shot nearly 40 percent on game (21-of-53), however, they were only 5-of-13 from the free throw line.
