LANCASTER - AVC's Shekinah Broadway sank one of two free throws late in the game and the Marauder women's basketball team won a close game against West LA College, 69-68, Saturday night at Marauder Gymnasium.
Shantanel Bivens recorded her eighth double-double of the season as she finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Jasmine Hayes finished with 13 points and nine rebounds and Dir'Rashua Patterson added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Malaysia Broome had 10 points for the Marauders, but it was her defense on the state's leading scorer, Zhane Carter, that helped fuel the victory. Carter did finish with 24 points (three below her average), but she only shot 6-of-20 from the field.
"This win means a lot even though we might not make the playoffs," said Broome. "We just want to finish the rest of the season hard. This is a very good win for our team."
AVC could have put the game away late, however, an easy missed layup and four consecutive missed free throws by the Marauders kept West LA in the game.
With the score tied 68-68, following a free throw by Carter, Broadway was fouled 20-feet from the basket. She made one free throw, but still West LA had an opportunity to win the game.
A last second desperation 3-pointer missed, sealing the game for the Marauders.
