LANCASTER - The Marauder softball team opened its season in impressive fashion with a 5-3 victory against Pasadena City College on Friday afternoon at Maraduer Stadium.
In addition to the victory, AVC head coach Cindy Vargas tied the school record with her 376th career victory, tying former longtime coach Gene Pagliaro. Vargas can stand alone with the record should the Marauders defeat No. 7 ranked Mt. SAC.
Unfortunately for Vargas, her 377th career victory will more than likely come away from Marauder Stadium as AVC's next five games are on the road. If you ask Vargas, she probably won't want to wait until Feb. 9, to pop the champagne bottles, when the Marauders return home to get that victory in front of her home crowd.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our pitching today," she said. "I am confident our bats will get going. Many of them had first game jitters. It was a great start to the season."
Morgan Arndt, who sat out last season, pitched 4 1/3 strong innings, allowing only one hit with five walks and two strikeouts.
Returning sophomore Rebecca Whelchel was solid at the plat for AVC as she finished 2-for-2, including a double, a walk and three RBI.
