SAN BERNARDINO - The Marauder men's basketball team hasn't had much luck on its side this season.
And it showed again on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the San Bernardino Tournament.
AVC trailed by as many as 16 points midway through the second half, only to tie the score with six seconds remaining in the game and saw Josh Moran drive the length of the court for a layup as time expired giving Grossmont College a 73-71 victory over the Marauders.
It was AVC's fourth loss in a row since its opening win against Orange Coast College in the first round of the Ventura Tournament. The Marauders have lost all four games by an average of only five points per game, including a pair of back-to-back 2-point losses to Saddleback College and Grossmont.
"We're still building. We started the game slow and trailed at halftime like always,"D'Mauria Jones said. "It was a miscomunication on defense (that led to the layup). It's very disappointing because we know we're better than what we're playing. Our team team chemistry is not there yet, but once it's there everything will be different."
Jones led AVC with 15 points. The only other player to score in double figures was Jailen Gill who finished with 10 point.
The Marauders have trailed at halftime in each of their first five games and able to claim victory in only one of those games. AVC seems to always make a run in the second half, much like against Saddleback and Grossmont but can't get over the hump.
The Marauders trailed 57-41 with 12:59 remaining in the second half following a layup by Grossmont. However, they kept chipping away at the lead and a 3-pointer by Cory Dollarhide tied the score with sex seconds remaining.
A defensive breakdown allowed Moran to score the game-winning layup.
