The Antelope Valley College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Bakersfield College for the Western State Conference finals in hopes of securing spots in the Regional Prelims on May 3rd at Cerritos College. Ailani Salazar received an at-large bid in the women's 1500 meters and is an alternate in the 5000-meter event (her participation in the 5k event will be determined after May 3rd since that event is not contested until the 10th).
Jorge Dela O Santillan made it two years in a row, advancing to the 400-meter preliminaries, pacing in the top 7 of the men's event. As she has been most of the season, Kayla Thompson remained unbeaten against conference competition in the 400 meters, running the second-fastest time of her career with a decisive gold medal run. She returned to grab the 200-meter silver medal and again recorded her second-fastest while a Marauder.
"I was hoping to advance a few more this time," head track coach Tony Veney commented. "But the three young people we have moving on are primed to hit their peak May 3rd".
Field events begin at 9 am, and Salazar will be the first Marauder on the track at 12:30 pm, followed by Thompson (1:30 pm) and Dela O Santillan (1:45 pm).
