LANCASTER - Much like it has done all season long, the Marauder men's basketball team had to struggle and claw and fight to get back into a game.
Against West LA College, that didn't change.
AVC trailed mostly the entire game but was able to hang around long enough for Jalen Etienne to knock down a deep 3-pointer as the game clock nearly hit triple zeros. Etienne's long distance 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining lifted the Marauders to a hard-earned 63-62 come-from-behind victory Saturday night at Marauder Gymnasium.
Since taking over the program in 2010, AVC head coach John Taylor has eclipsed the 20-win mark. The victory marks the 13th straight season a Taylor-coached team has reached 20 wins.
AVC trailed late in the game but used pressure defense to get back into it. The Marauders forced a turnover and got the ball back with 15 seconds remaining and trailing 62-60.
With the clock winding down Etienne was forced to shoot a 3-pointer that hit nothing but net giving AVC the lead with 0.6 seconds remaining. Still West LA had a chance, but Chris Martin tipped the in bounds pass as time expired.
"It feels really good to get this 'w', especially at home," said AVC's Gregory Wesley, who finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks. "We brought ourselves together. We realized the energy was down, so we tried to pick up the energy and feed off each other."
With the victory, the Marauders remain in third place in the Western States-South Division Conference with Santa Monica College, trailing Glendale College by a game in the race for second place and three games behind leader Bakersfield College.
Both Santa Monica and Bakersfield, two teams which defeated the Marauders already this season, visit Marauder Gymnasium later this month. AVC is undefeated at home this season.
Cory Dollarhide led the Maraduers with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Martin finished with 10 points and six assists and Etienne added nine points.
