LANCASTER - The Western State Conference-East Division didn't get off to the start the Marauder women's volleyball team had hoped for.
AVC's opening round conference opponent: a match with the state's sixth ranked team, Bakersfield College.
The Marauders could never really get things rolling and had a difficult time with the Renegades as their opponents from the north spoiled AVC's conference home debut with an easy 25-17, 25-10, 25-13 victory, Wednesday evening at Marauder Gymnasium on Newton Chelette Court.
AVC, which arguably competes in the top conference in the state sporting the sixth ranked team and No. 11 College of the Canyons, could only muster a total of 16 kills, seven of those from Kaeley Avendano. The Renegades (13-4, 1-0) had a total of 38 kills, including six players with three kills or more. Bakersfield had a better than 50 percent kill percentage.
Taylor Williams led the Marauders (2-8, 0-1) with 15 assists and Alexa Fausto finished with four kills. AVC's Melissa Lee led the team with six digs.
Things don't get much better for the Marauders as they host COC on Friday, before a treacherous four-game road stretch.
