Twelve Marauders advanced to the Southern California Regional Championship first round from the Western State Conference Finals hosted by Moorpark College on Friday.
Ella Gawellek and Sade Vasquez had already secured their trip to San Diego Mesa College on May 5th at the preliminaries held at AVC back on April 21st. Gawallek added another event at Moorpark with a 4th place finish in the women's discus.
The women's 4x100 meter relay grabbed a qualifying 6th place with a team consisting of Sara Morales, Ceraya Simon, Celeste Meza, and Prishencia Nnoham.
The men's 4x100 relay of Langston Jackson, Jorge Dela O Santillan, Makuochukwu Ene, and TJ Graham came in ranked 5th but produced their best time of the year, grabbing the 3rd spot. The Marauders had three men ranked in the top 6 in the triple jump, and form held true as Ene, Jordan Kennon, and Kaelin Smith placed 4th, 5th, and 6th, all advancing to San Diego.
The 400 meters turned out to be the best track event of the day for the Antelope Valley, as Prishencia Nnoham placed second (a mere 0.15 seconds from the win) in a time of 55.93, which ranks among the top 8 in school history. Jorge Dela O Santillan also placed 2nd in the men's 400 meters, upsetting the form chart as he was ranked 8th coming in.
The women's team of Meza, Nnoham, Rosa Aquiano, and Simon placed 5th overall, also advancing to San Diego.
"We are sending a pretty good squad to San Diego next week," head coach Tony Veney commented. "We had over a dozen personal bests the last 2 weeks, so I hope this means we are peaking at the best time," he added.
Field events at the Regionals in San Diego begin May 5th at 10 am, with track races starting at noon.
