Women's tennis fell to Santa Barbara 2-7 in their final home match but rebounded with a dominant 9-0 win over Victor Valley College to wrap up their regular season.
The loss to Santa Barbara City College was 2-7. In doubles play, No. 1 Sydney Bush and Nicole Padilla lost 3-8, No. 2 Kaelin Vasquez and Jocelyn Ortega lost 4-8, and No. 3 Arianett Avina and Emily Lopez won by default. In singles play, No. 1 Bush lost 0-6, 3-6, No. 2 Padilla lost the first set 2-6, then had to retire in the first game of the second set due to injury. No. 3 Kaelin Vasquez lost 3-6, 2-6, No. 4 Ortega lost 3-6, 0-6, No. 5 Avina lost 4-6 6-7 (3), and No. 6 Lopez won by default.
Facing winds of 30-40 miles per hour with frequent gusts of nearly 50 miles per hour, the Marauders overcame the elements with a dominant 9-0 victory against Victor Valley College.
In doubles play, No. 1 Sydney Bush and Nicole Padilla won 8-2, No. 2 Kaelin Vasquez and Genesis Vasquez won 8-3, and No. 3 Arianett Avina and Emily Lopez won by default.
In singles play, No. 1 Bush won 6-3,6-2, No. 2 Padilla won 6-0, 6-0, No. 3 Kaelin Vasquez won 6-1, 6-0, 3-6, No. 4 Avina won 6-3, 6-1, No. 5 Lopez won 6-1, 6-0, and No. 6 Genesis Vasquez won by default. The Marauders lost only a total of 11 games in singles play. Coach Webb noted, "Today's match presented us with the opportunity to deal with the elements and make the necessary adjustments to be successful. The ladies did a great job of that throughout the whole lineup. This is exactly how we want to play as we head into the postseason with the conference tournament beginning next Tuesday."
AVC finished the regular season 3-18 and 0-14 in Western State Conference play. Next up for the Marauders is the Western State Conference Tournament, held at Ventura College. Preliminary rounds begin Tuesday, April 2, at 1:00 PM, and subsequent rounds are played on Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6.
The Conference tournament will crown individual singles and doubles champions as well as determine the qualifiers for the CCAAA Individual Singles and Doubles State Championships, played in Ojai April 25th-28th.
