After unforeseen scheduling delays, the AVC Women's Tennis team finally began the season at home versus College of the Sequoias. It proved to be worth the wait as the Marauders prevailed 7-2. Kristi Henderson turned in a dominating performance winning her singles match 6-0, 6-1. She teamed with Marijane Garcia to also take their doubles match 8-3. Garcia struggled, losing her singles match 3-6, 5-7.
The Marauders quickly returned to their winning ways picking up singles victories from the remaining team members. Jylian Brown struggled early but won, 7-5, 6-0. Becca Jaimes won 6-2, 6-0, followed by Marisol Valdez, who won 6-1, 6-4. Frida Anguiano won 6-2, 6-1.
Valdez and Anguiano won their first ever singles matches. Although Brown and Jameis dropped their doubles match in a hard-fought 6-8 defeat, Valdez and Anguiano notched the win in the last doubles match 8-4.
In a grueling non-scoring match, Marbella Rubio lost in a third set tiebreak after splitting the first two sets.
Head Coach Justin Webb stated, "Clearly there was some nervous play early, as this was our first match, but the ladies settled in nicely and played well throughout the day. To drop only 3 sets in our first match is a great start, particularly since all but one of the ladies in our scoring matches today are freshmen." Webb also noted, " We are always happy with a win and have identified additional areas for improvement moving forward."
The Marauders begin Western State Conference play with their next match on the road at Santa Monica next Tuesday, February 4th at 1:00 pm.
