VALLEY GLEN - Shantanel Bivens tallied her ninth double-double of the season finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds, including four blocked shots helping lead the Marauder women's basketball team to a 47-45 victory over host LA Valley College, Wednesday evening.
With the victory, the Marauders moved into a third place tie with LA Valley in the Western States Conference-South Division standings. They trail Citrus College by one game for second place and four games behind division leader College of the Canyons. AVC still has an outside chance of making the playoffs.
"Our win tonight was determined by our defense," AVC head coach Barry Green said. "With only a couple of minutes remaining in the game our team contested shots and allowed no second chances. I'm very happy with our girls' togetherness and determination to win."
AVC's defense forced LA Valley into 20 turnovers, while it committed only eight.
AVC got balanced scoring from Shekinah Broadway (10 points) and Malaysia Broome (eight points) and Jasmine Hayes (eight points).
In a see-saw game which featured several ties and lead changes, LA Valley took a 45-41 lead with 2:08 remaining, however, Broome connected on a 3-pointer on the Marauders ensuing possession trimming the lead to 45-44 with 1:48 remaining.
A bucket by Hayes with less than a minute remaining gave the Marauders the lead for good, 46-45. LA Valley's Diamond O'Connor missed a jumper with five second remaining and Bivens grabbed the rebound sealing the victory.
