AVC Softball gave recognition to outstanding sophomores Alyssa Weinreb, Alexa Alvarez, Maritza Arroyo, Bailey Damian, and Savannah Moakley before Thursday's two-game home series against the Ventura Pirates.
After the ceremony, the Marauders got down to business, taking game one 5-0. The game was scoreless through two innings until Moakley homered in the third to get AVC going. An inning later, Ariel Nieto took Ventura deep for her seventh home run of the season and gave the Marauders a 2-0 lead.
Antelope Valley's defense held the Pirates in check with Arianna Arroyo in the circle. Arroyo struck out eight of 25 batters faced in seven innings of work.
Alvarez hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning to score Moakley, making it 3-0. Then in the sixth, Nayely Delgado and Amy Manzo both hit RBI doubles to put the game out of reach.
The Marauders struggled to keep the offense going in game two as they fell 10-2. Alexa Alvarez gave AVC an early one-run lead with a solo homer in the first. Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Antelope Valley scored again in the second inning when Trinity Holman doubled, scoring Amy Manzo, but it wouldn't be enough to complete the sweep at home.
AVC will look to finish the season with wins against the Pirates as they face them for another doubleheader in Ventura on Saturday.
