The 2024 Marauders men's and women's track season tipped off with a trip to Bakersfield College and the annual Battle of the Region. Teams from both Northern and Southern Californian sections were invited.
2022 State 400-meter silver medalist Kayla Thompson grabbed the lone first-place finish in her specialty, winning by over 20 meters. Her performance met the regional minimum standard and missed the state "B" standard by a mere 0.25 seconds.
All Western State Conference 400-meter man Jorge Dela O Santillan placed 2nd in his heat of the 400 meters (also meeting the regional minimum standard) and topped off his day by winning his section of the 800 meters (with teammate Jesus Flores placing 3rd in the same heat).
"This was a good start for the team in the face of cold and windy conditions," commented head track coach Tony Veney. "We had a number of newbies and returners open their season today, and the marks they achieved have set a standard of where we want to be in May," he added.
The Marauders return to action on February 16th when they travel to Ventura College for the WSC Relays showcasing all 12 track and field teams. Field events start at noon, while the running events begin at 1:00 pm.
