LANCASTER - Joshua Cummings, Alec Franco and Ryan Alvarez joined teammate Bradley Wiggs to compete at next week's state meet held at San Diego Mesa College.

Wiggs will compete in the 10000 meter run, an event he finished third in last week at Antelope Valley College and Alvarez will compete in the hammer throw after finishing fifth in the event. Both Wiggs and Alvarez will compete on Friday evening.

The other two athletes, Cummings in the 400 meter dash and Franco in the 3000 meter steeplechase will compete on Saturday.

Franco punched his ticket finishing sixth in his event with a time of 9:53.84 just ahead of Cesar Marquez, who led for about five laps. Marquez finished with a time of 9:53.99. The event takes the top six finishers in both the north and south regions.

Cummings ran a personal best time of 47.86 and finished fifth. The state takes the top four finishers of both regions and the fifth fastest time between the two. Cummings time was much better than the fifth place finisher in the north, Ohdel James of College of the Sequoias who ran 48.57. Cummings time would have placed him in second place in the north as its winning time was 47.83 by Isaiah John of COS.

Alvarez was fifth in the hammer with a toss of 154-11.

"I felt pretty strong. I had some really good throws in practice this week. I just went out there and did what I was supposed to do," said Alvarez. "I just have to work on my speed. The power is definitely there, I just have to get faster. I'm never pleased unless I PR and that's only for a few minutes. It feels good to move on. It's not every day you get to do every track meet scheduled."

In a huge shock, AVC's Kyle Schilling failed to qualify in the shot put and the hammer. Schilling's best event is the shot put in which he finished seventh, and the state only qualifies six throwers. Schilling threw a 49-02.50 right behind Kyle Jenkins of Riverside who finished sixth with a put of 49-05.75. Schilling also finished eighth in the hammer at 152-09.
