FIVE MARAUDERS MOVE ON TO SO CAL FINALS, WIGGS ADVANCES TO STATE
LANCASTER - Bradley Wiggs advanced to the state meet in the 10000m following an impressive showing at the Southern California Regional Championships at Antelope Valley College, Saturday afternoon.
Wiggs' race was the only finals race held on Saturday, all other races were prelims in which five Marauder track and field athletes moved on to the finals next week on the same track.
Wiggs finished third in the race with a time of 32:25.04. Rival Vahagn Isayan of Glendale College won the race in 32:16.94. Mt. Sac's Daniel Harrigan-Cota finished second (32:23.21).
Thrower Kyle Schilling moved on to next week's finals in the shot put and hammer throw. AVC had two other throwers move on in the hammer as well including Ryan Alvarez and John Jablonski. Schilling finished third in the shot put (15.38m) behind James Jones of Riverside College (16.79m) and Josh McClure of Moorpark College (16.03m).
Schilling was fifth in the hammer (47.05m), while Alvarez (45.03m) and Jablonski (44.61m) finished ninth and 11th respectively.
Coming off a disappointing race in Bakersfield College for conference finals, sprinter Joshua Cummings responded with his second best time of the year in the 400 meters. Cummings ran 48.23 finishing third in his heat and sixth overall. Teammate Micah Robinson (50.24) failed to make it to next week's finals.
"I think I got out passive, so I had to play catch up because they got out faster than me," Cummings said. "Once I hit the turn I realized I didn't get out as hard. It was a good race, but I was hoping to run a 47."
Alec Franco started off the day in the steeplechase and finished fourth overall with a time of 9:53.36 propelling him into the meet next Saturday.
