SANTA MONICA - Jose Mojica scored his ninth goal of the season early in the first half to give the Marauder men's soccer team the early lead, but it was not enough as Santa Monica College rallied back to earn a hard fought 3-2 victory, Tuesday afternoon at Santa Monica College.
"Today was a huge game for us against Santa Monica because they are always a post season team and it was a good test for a first-year program," AVC head coach Jerry Stupar said. "We entered the game not wanting to show them too much respect and beat them with tactics and heart."
Mojica, who is second in the state in goals behind San Diego City College's Francisco Contreras (11), scored an early goal only four minutes in the game giving the Marauders (2-2-1) a 1-0 lead. The Corsairs (2-2-2) rallied to even the match, 1-1, at halftime.
Alfredo Salcedo gave AVC a 2-1 lead at 64:00, but that lead was short lived as Santa Monica scored only six minutes later to even the match. At 88:00, the Corsairs took the lead for good following a goal.
Santa Monica out shot the Marauders 9-8 and time of possession was virtually even.
