At Santa Maria Country Club, Connor Jazwiecki led the Marauders with a 78, followed by Ethan Phillips (82).
At Santa Maria Country Club, Connor Jazwiecki led the Marauders with a 78, followed by Ethan Phillips (82), Carson Ireland (87), and Jacob Peters (88). AVC finished in 7th place ahead of host Alan Hancock College.
Connor, a sophomore, had success at Santa Maria last season and was confident heading into the round. "We've been waiting for him to break out, so it was good to see him get results," said head coach Brad Hazard.
Jazwiecki was 3 strokes under the course average of 81.
"I struggled on the first couple of holes, but mentally, I convinced myself to stay in the round, and I was able to salvage a solid round. I've been putting in a lot of work, so it's nice to see that work pay off," Jazwiecki commented.
The Marauders see positive signs as their team score continues to improve, but they are still far from the leaderboard. "I'm looking for these guys to be more consistent and improve our scrambling ability by making better decisions on the course," added Coach Hazard.
At Rio Bravo Country Club in Bakersfield, Ethan Phillips led the team, finishing with a top-10 score of 76 on the day. He was one over with a 37 on the front and shot a 39 on the back nine with 2 birdies on the day. Club selection was key for Phillips as he was accurate off the tee, hitting 13 of 14 fairways. The sophomore from Santa Clarita is keeping himself in a good position to make regionals as the team nears the halfway point in league play.
"I've worked hard on my mental game the last couple weeks just keeping myself in a good state of mind and trying to limit mental mistakes. I made mistakes here and there today, but I was able to stay positive," said Phillips.
Amid the 7th-place finish, freshman Jacob Peters shot his best score of the season at 78. Peters minimized his mistakes and had the short game dialed in with 29 putts and 6 up and downs.
Connor Jazwiecki recorded an 81 on the day, with Carson Ireland at 87 and Mikey Dubski scoring 89. "Although we've been stuck in this spot, we continue to improve, and it's encouraging to know that if Carson and Mikey post scores like they are capable of, then we are in the mix today," commented Hazard.
The next round for the Marauders will be the WSC Finals Preview on Monday, March 17, at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano, CA.
