LANCASTER - It took San Bernardino Valley more extra work than one would expect, but teh Wolverines were able to win their third Gregg Anderson Memorial at the 66th Annual AVC Men's Basketball Tournament in five tries.
Actually, it was something of a normal No. 1 SBV tournament performance, except in this one, they figured out a way to win it all. After winning back-to-back in 2013 and 2014, the Wolverines came into the AVC Tournament the last three years ranked one in the state. In 2015, Antelope Valley dropped them in the finals, and in 2016 eventual tournament champion Fullerton beat them in the second round.
It looked like the No. 1 ranking coming into the tournament curse was going to bite them again, when with three seconds left in the second round, Ventura hit a three to go up by one. But the Pirates misjudged the long inbounds pass and that allowed tournament MVP Craig LeCesne to hit the winning lay-up with 1.3 seconds left.
Against DeAnza in the championship game, the Wolverines trailed by five at the half, and never was able to open much of gap on the Dons until DeAnza started missing threes in the last two minutes and the Wolveines hit their free throws.
Antelope Valley surprised Ventura, with each team playing much differntly than the night before, with the Marauders taking third place title 83-54, while LA Harbor won the consolation title with a typical for this tournament 124-100 win over MiraCosta.
