CHABOT - The Marauder men's basketball team ended its preseason schedule in impressive fashion with an 83-74 overtime victory over Chabot College.
AVC began the season by winning its first three tournaments and brought home third place in the Chabot Tournament. Jalen Etiene was named to the All-Tournament team, finishing with 19 points and five assists.
The Marauders had three other players score in double figures: Joseph Moorer (17 points), Cory Dollarhide (12 points) and Chris Martin (11 points).
Unlike the previous game against Cosumnes River, the Marauders (14-1) shot at a high percentage, finishing the game 45% from the field and 12-0f-29 from 3-point range.
COSUMNES RIVER - Marauder men's basketball head coach John Taylor said Monday that that his team will have a target on its back since earning the top spot among the state rankings.
It turns out he was right.
AVC shot poorly (37.7%) for the game and was only 8-of-26 from 3-point range and Cosumnes River pulled off the shocker, with a 71-64 victory over the top ranked team in the state, Tuesday night in the Chabot Tournament.
"We shot the ball very poorly and they packed it in tight against us," Taylor said. "Hey, it happens. Sometimes it's just styles. We tried two different styles tonight and neither of them worked."
The Marauders, who were the lone remaining team left in California entering the game, were vying for their fourth tournament title this season. AVC's (13-1) loss broke a streak of three consecutive seasons in which the Marauders won the last tournament on their schedule (Canyons 2012, 2013 and Chabot 2014).
AVC was led by Chris Martin who finished with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists. Martin is averaging 14 points per game in the tournament. Brandon Wade finished with 10 points and Joseph Moorer, who scored 26 points on Monday, struggled from the floor shooting 3-for-10 and scoring eight points.
The Marauders play tomorrow at 3pm for 3rd place.
MENDOCINO - The Marauder men's basketball team got two gifts on Monday.
For the first time in school history AVC earned the top spot in the state among the rankings. Second, flashing their new medal the Marauders went out and handled business showing why their the No. 1 ranked team in the state with an 83-68 victory over Mendocino College.
Joseph Moorer led AVC with 26 points, while Cory Dollarhide added 13 points. The Marauders had efficient balanced scoring as Chris Martin and Jalen Etienne finished each with nine points and Brandon Wade and Kashif Williams chipped in with eight points apiece.
"Every team we play now we definitely have a target on our back," head coach John Taylor said. "I thought Mendocino came out strong, but I thought we started to pull away once we started playing better defense. I thought we played a good floor game offensively. We're getting everyone's best shot, so we have to give them ours."
The Marauders shot a blistering 52% (29-56) from the floor and 90.5% (19-21) from the free throw line, while committing only nine turnovers.
