AVC Football lost to Cerritos College 44-23 in Friday's season opener at home. The Marauders had a 10-3 lead to end the 1st quarter after a 26-yard Jeffrey Kavanagh filed goal and a defensive score by Adam Colon. Camaron Gee forced a fumble, which Colon recovered and returned 35 yards for the touchdown. Colon also had a 3-yard sack on the day, while Gee finished with 4 tackles (one for a 13-yard loss).
In the 2nd quarter, Cerritos scored 28 unanswered points to take a 31-10 lead at the half. AVC's offense showed some life to open the 3rd quarter when Jacob Root connected with Damario Jackson for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Root, a freshman from Tehachapi High School, finished with 106 passing yards and 41 yards rushing, along with one passing TD. Jackson led the team in receiving with 3 catches for 54 yards and a TD.
Marzeal Smith and Dorsey Davis had a team-high 6 tackles each, while Smith also had a 4th-quarter blocked field goal, which he returned 80 yards for a touchdown. Dewayne Wall and Corey Neal also had 5 tackles each for the Marauder defense.
AVC (0-1) will look to bounce back on the road as they travel to face Grossmont on Saturday.
