AVC Baseball edged Citrus 16-15 on Monday after a 12-6 loss to Glendale on Saturday.
Saturday's game three loss against Glendale saw the Marauders score their 6 runs off 10 hits with 1 error. The Vaqueros scored a run in the 2nd and 4th inning, but a big 8-run 3rd inning put too much distance between the two teams. AVC tried to battle back as Jack Taylor hit his first home run of the season, a 2-RBI blast to center field. A few more runs were added as Keon Moseni went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Josh Nuno also had 2 RBI off 2 hits. But there was too much ground to make up as the Marauders lost the game and the series (0-3) to Glendale.
Game one of the three-game series against Citrus was initially scheduled for Tuesday but was moved up to Monday due to a rainy forecast. The back-and-forth battle wouldn't be decided until the bottom of the last inning.
The Owls jumped out to an early lead, scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning. AVC responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning when Josh Nuno hit a 2-RBI home run. Nuno has 2 home runs on the season and a team-leading 21 RBI with a .769 slugging percentage. Citrus scored another 2 runs in the 2nd, and AVC would respond again with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Daniel Munoz hit an RBI single, Nuno recorded another RBI on a groundout, and both Aidan Jbara and Nick Hagen hit RBI doubles.
Up 6-4 after two, Jason Zhang and Zach Terry hit RBI singles to push the lead to 4 in the 3rd. Citrus responded by scoring 8 runs over the next four innings to take a 12-8 lead. The Marauders battled to take the lead (14-12) right back with 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th. Zhang doubled to score 2, Trey Thomas singled to score 1, and Nuno tripled to score 3. Nuno finished with 2 hits and 6 RBI, while Zhang finished 4-for-5 with 3 RBI on the day. Momentum swung back in the Owl's favor in the 8th and top of the 9th as they scored 3 to take a 15-14 lead. AVC returned the favor one last time as Zach Terry hit a walk-off 2 RBI home run, giving them the 16-15 win. Terry finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. The Marauders pitched a committee of seven, including Darren Roberts (3k's), Willem Heilker (2k's), and Eddie Rocha, who had a strikeout and forced a crucial double play to close it out defensively for Antelope Valley.
AVC is 8-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play. They will be at Citrus for game two on Thursday and back home to close the series out on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
