LANCASTER - For the first set the Marauder women's volleyball team went punch for punch with the state's No. 11 ranked team, College of the Canyons.
But for whatever reason AVC lost its swagger following the first set.
The Cougars then showed why it might contend for a state title by easily winning the next two sets and earning a 25-21, 25-13, 25-5 victory over the Marauders, Friday night on Newton Chelette Court.
"I think that everyone got in our own heads. We just kind of fell apart," AVC's Kaeley Avendano said. "We stopped communicating and after we started the second set with an error all the momentum stopped. But we've been talking to each other and we know what we need to do. I think we should have it put together by our next match. I just know we could have done better."
Avendano led the Marauders (2-9, 0-2) with nine kills and eight digs. Taylor Williams finished with four kills and 18 assists.
COC (15-4, 2-0) had five players contribute with four kills or more.
AVC looks to get in the win column in conference play when it travels to West LA College (3-14) on Friday.
