AVC Women's Tennis earns its first victory of the year, defeating the visiting El Camino College Warriors 5-4.
In doubles play, #1 Ariana Valiente and Alex Coons jumped out to a 6-3 lead but then found themselves down 6-7 and 7-8 before staving off defeat twice and winning 9-8 (3) after winning the set tiebreaker. #2 Isabel Ortiz and Giselle Reyes lost 3-8, and #3 Diana Henriquez and My Kenzie Gross-Solomon won 8-1.
In singles play, #1 Valiente lost 0-6, 3-6, #2 Ortiz won the first set 6-1, lost the second 1-6, and fought hard before losing in the third set 3-6. Number 3 Coons won 6-3, 6-4, #4 Reyes won 6-2, 6-1, #5 Gross-Solomon won the first set 6-0, then dropped the following two sets losing 3-6, 3-6, and #6 Henriquez won 6-3, 6-2.
"Today we had several opportunities to allow swings in each match to affect us. The ladies did a great job of staying focused and earning the victory. Ariana and Alex won their first doubles match and demonstrated what it means to overcome adversity," Head Coach Justin Webb stated. "I was also really pleased with Giselle and Diana's play in singles. Both ladies did a great job of staying consistent and earning key wins," he added.
The Marauders are 1-4 and will return to the court for a road match vs. LA Mission College on Tuesday, 2/1, at 2:00 PM.
