The Marauders opened Western State Conference play at home vs. the Ventura College Pirates on Tuesday. In a back-and-forth match, the Marauders prevailed 5-4.
In doubles play, No. 1 Nicole Padilla and Sydney Bush lost 2-8, No. 2 Naia Smithley won 8-4, and No. 3 Mary Williams and Arianett Avina won by default.
In singles action, Padilla lost 2-6, 1-6, while Sydney Bush took the first set 6-3 but lost, dropping the next two at 3-6, 1-6. Smithley was defeated 2-6, 4-6. Julie Tejeda lost the first set in a tiebreak 6-7(5) before rallying to win the last two 6-1, 6-1 for her first singles win of the year. Mary Williams picked up her first singles win as well, winning 6-1, 6-3, and Avina won by default.
"We're pleased to start conference play with a win, which isn't easy to come by," noted Head Coach Justin Webb. "It was great to see Julie rally after dropping the first set, as that is often difficult for freshmen to do, and the way it worked out, that ended up being the deciding match," he added.
The Marauders will take to the road for their next match on Thursday, February 2nd, at Santa Monica and return home on February 9th to battle Bakersfield.
