OCEANSIDE - With a little bit of help from her teammates Vivian Jauregui scored a goal in the second overtime which helped the Marauder women's soccer team to its first-ever post season victory as it held on for a 1-0 win over MiraCosta, in the opening round of the Southern California Regionals, Thursday afternoon.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation and extended it to the first overtime where it still remained scoreless. Still the Marauders had to finish the overtime period and their defense maintained the shutout, marking the first win and shutout in playoff in Marauder history.
"This was a great victory. The girls were super excited and showed a a lot of character and resilience on the field," AVC head coach Charles Gordon said. "I was extremely proud of the defense. They did a great job rotating and they really worked for each other on the field. The did a tremendous job ensuring the shutout over a very good MiraCosta team."
AVC (10-5-4), which so far in 2017 with its first winning season since their conference championship in 2011, was dominant on its offensive attack as it held a 13-4 advantage on shots on goal and a 20-9 advantage on overall shots. Goalkeeper Gabriela Espinoza helped preserve the shutout for the Marauders after finishing with four saves.
