KLUNDT TIES FOR FIFTH IN VENTURA FOR MARAUDER WOMEN'S GOLF
VENTURA - Michaela Klundt finished tied for fifth place in the Marauder women's golf team's opening tournament of the year at the South Coast Classic in Ventura.
Klundt finished with a combined score of 150 shooting a 76 on Sunday afternoon and responding with 74 on Monday. Despite finishing tied for fifth, Klundt finished second overall amongst conference teams. Vanessa Watkins of Santa Barbara City College shot a combined score of 147, including a 70 on Monday. Nao Bando of Sierra College had the lowest score with a combined 141.
"I feel like I could have done much better today. I was one under on the front nine and I totally tanked on the back nine with a plus four," Klundt said. "I'm disappointed and I had a chance to shoot a good score. I really kind of unraveled a little bit. I need to work on my distance control with my wedges."
Amy Chaffino and RyAnne Gaston shot thier best rounds ever with AVC. Chaffino, a sophomore, finished with a 92 and Gaston who shot a disappointing 110 on Monday, finished with a 98 on Monday.
"The funny thing is she (Gaston) said she was going to improve her score by 12 shots and that's what she did" Klundt said. "The team didn't let the day before affect them. They kind of let it wash away."
Defending state champion Sierra won the overall team title with a total score of 600. State runner-up SBCC finished second with a score of 622. The Marauders finished with a total team score of 762.
"Michaela was very consistent today. She is going to be very solid this season," AVC head coach George Fetters said. "This was the lowest score we've had in two years, but our conference is really loaded. We are by far better than last year, but so is the conference. As team I think we have to improve, but we will get better. I'm confident that five girls on this team will shoot less than 100."
