LANCASTER - It wasn't quite the finish the Marauder women's basketball team had hoped for after an impressive opening round victory in the annual AVC Holiday Tournament.
AVC lost its second game in a row by a large margin, this time in the third place game, 89-47, at the hands of Cypress College, Sunday afternoon at Marauder Gymnasium.
"It's just the little things. We don't know how to capitalize on things. When we get down we let things get to us," Makaela Manson said. "It seems like teams only play their hardest against us. We just let teams shoot and we don't adjust. We have to listen to ourselves because we're the ones playing. It's over now, we just have to keep moving forward."
After the Chargers (10-4) built a lead to end the first quarter, the Marauders (4-9) finally woke up and tried to mount a comeback. They cut the lead to as many as five points, twice, but would get no closer. Cypress close the second quarter on a 19-0 run and led 52-28 at halftime.
Brieanna Perkins (10 points) was an All-Tourney pick and Deja Smith, who kept AVC in the game much of the second quarter, was named the Nancy Jo & Johnny Costa Most Inspirational Player of the tournament.
Smith, who entered the game averaging nearly 16 points per game, led the Marauders with 15 points. Perkins added 10 points and three 3-pointers.
