BAKERSFIELD - The Marauder women's basketball team got off to an inauspicious start to the season as it didn't shoot the ball well and lost its opening game of the season to Pasadena City College, 76-55, Thursday evening at the Bakersfield Crossover Tournament at Bakersfield College.
"We just didn't shoot the ball well tonight," AVC head coach Barry Green said.
The Marauders (0-1) trailed 39-25 at halftime and just couldn't get in sync or get any offensive rhythm.
AVC shot a dismal 29 percent from the field, which was its Achilles heel all of last season.
Deja Smith led the Marauders with 21 points, including two 3-pointers, four rebounds and three assists. Katilin Stephenson added nine points and 13 rebounds but was only 3-of-13 from the field.
All five starters for Pasadena scored in double figures.
The Marauders look to fix things on Friday in the second day of the tournament when they face Riverside City College.
