LANCASTER - It certainly wasn't pretty on either end, but the Marauder women's basketball team, which led most of the entire way, found a way to squeak out a 62-57 double-overtime victory over LA Valley College.
AVC (8-11, 3-1) had a comfortable 47-39 with 4:35 remaining in the fourth quarter following a 3-point shot by Destini Price. The Marauders woudn't convert another field goal until midway through the first overtime.
After LA Valley led 48-47 with 14 seconds remaining in the game, AVC called a timeout. Following the timeout the Marauders offense was in disarray and Price was forced to drive to the basket. She was fouled and made one of two free throws which sent the game into overtime.
Dir'Rashua Patterson made a basket with exactly 30 seconds remaining giving AVC a 52-50 lead. The Monarchs right back down and scored tying the score, 52-52. Shekinah Broadway missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer which sent the game into double-overtime.
"Both teams were trying to get a victory and that's how it goes," said Jasmine Hayes, who finished with four points and 11 rebounds. "I just tried to keep my team energized and keep up the intensity. This is a big victory for us. We're going for the banner."
LA Valley led 56-54 and the Marauders came down and missed a shot which ended up in a jump ball giving the ball to LA Valley. However, Bivens and LA Valley's Diamond O'Connor were each assessed a technical foul. LA Valley's Adaora Obi was also hit with an unsportsmanlike foul.
Broadway made two free throws, tying the score 56-56, then hit a 3-pointer giving AVC the lead for good, 59-56.
Broadway finished with 14 points and three assists. Patterson had a double-double finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bivens added 14 points and six rebounds.
