LANCASTER - The Marauder men's soccer team got a second half goal from Joseph Barrientos to help propel his team to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Victory Valley College.
'Every match against Victor Valley has always been tough as well as physical. I've been coaching against Mike Bradburry for years both on the men's and women's side and it's been a war every single game, but the mutual respect we have for each other makes it exciting to watch and always professional," AVC head coach Jerry Stupar said. "We won the shot chart 19 to six, but their (Victor Valley) defense battled the entire 90 minutes making it tough to score."
The Marauders finally broke free at the 68:00 minute mark of the second half as both team battled to a first half tie. Jose Mojica found Barrientos, which proved to be the game-winner.
"There were many close opportunities that should have secured the match early, but he (Barrientos) made the difference when subbed in about the 60th minute into the match," said Stupar. "Victor Valley has tough wingers and he (Barrientos) has been showing much improvement in training so I knew his physical presence would help as well as he's a shooting winger. (In the second half) Jose (Mojica) had a break away and placed a perfect lateral ball pass to Barrientos and he scored the winning goal. Defensive efforts by Osmar Flores and Ernesto Guevera along with the solid back line kept Victor Valley scoreless."
AVC wraps up its regular season on Tuesday on the road against College of the Canyons and at home against Bakersfield on Friday.
