BANKHEAD HAS 154 ALL-PURPOSE YARDS AS MARAUDERS FALL TO CANYONS IN SEASON OPENER
Sophomore running back Amir Bankhead led all rushers with 122 yards on 21 carries in Saturday's season opener at AVC. He also added a team-high 5 receptions for 32 yards. The Marauders fell behind early as the Cougars scored on the opening drive. AVC kept pace with a 12-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Caden Hinton. Canyons found the endzone two more times in the 1st quarter to take a 21-7 lead. They would take that lead into the locker room at halftime as neither team scored in the 2nd quarter.
AVC's offensive struggles continued with no points in the 3rd quarter, while the Cougars added two touchdowns and a safety. Down 44-7 in the 4th, the Marauders showed some signs of life as freshman quarterback Warren Daryos took over, going 5-5 with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Robert James. The two-point conversion failed, resulting in a final score of 44-13.
Defensively, Miles Cooney, Doron Mitchell, and Gannon Ginnis led the Marauders with 6 tackles each, while Dazhon Sanders and Aaron Murdoch each had an interception.
Antelope Valley (0-1) will look to rebound next week at home against Mt. San Jacinto (0-1). Kickoff is at 6:00 pm on Saturday (9/10) at Marauder Stadium.
