Marauder Football broke single-game AVC records for Most Passing Yards and Most Receiving Yards on Saturday in a 52-55 loss to the Santa Ana Dons. AVC quarterback Brian Adams set a new record throwing for a total of 561 yards on the day. He went 32-50 with four touchdowns. WR Errius Collins benefitted the most as he set a new record with 245 yards receiving on the day. Errius finished with ten receptions and caught two touchdowns passes.
In a game that saw plenty of action, the Marauders came up short in the overtime loss. Santa Ana struck first scoring a 92-yard kickoff return to start the game by Indiana Taylor. Dons QB Luke Wilson then connected with Joshua Rice for a 6-yard TD pass to take Santa Ana up 14-0. Antelope Valley responded with a touchdown by Xavier Clay on a 3-yard run, but the Marauders failed to convert the extra point and trailed 6-14.
Santa Ana kept the offense going with another Wilson TD pass. This time it was a 34-yard strike to Taylor, giving him his second touchdown of the game. The Marauders responded again with a 34-yard TD pass from Adams to Collins with 3:18 left in the quarter to bring the score to 13-21.
There would be only one more score in the first half as Santa Ana's Tyler Shimomura caught a 37-yard TD pass from Wilson near the four-minute mark in the second quarter. The Marauders went into halftime down 13-28, but they came out fired up for the second half. Adams threw his second TD pass when he found Artell Marks with an 11-yard strike to bring AVC back to within a possession at 20-28. The Dons scored with a little under ten minutes to go in the third when Wilson and Shimomura connected again. This time it was a 36-yard pass to take the Dons up 20-35. AVC then completed a 7-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run from Xavier Clay for the last score of the third quarter.
Santa Ana was up 35-27 to start the fourth quarter, but the Marauders scored again pulling them within a couple of points at 33-35. It was Xavier Clay back for more with a 7-yard touchdown scamper.
Clay finished with three touchdowns and 52 yards rushing on 12 attempts.
The Dons then scored back to back rushing touchdowns by Cole Nequette to take a 49-33 lead with 7:08 left in regulation. AVC answered quickly when Erius Collins caught his second TD pass of the day on a 79-yard pass from Adams. The score was 41-49 as AVC made the two-point conversion on a rush by Tyler Selvig. The Marauder defense held strong for two drives giving the offense a chance to tie it up late in the fourth. Brian Adams would do just that when he hit Artell Marks on a 25-yard TD pass, his second receiving touchdown of the day. Marks finished with 138 yards receiving on ten catches to go along with his pair of TD catches. Tyler Selvig converted the 2-point try again to make it 49-49 with 3:15 left on the clock. It seemed the Marauders would escape with a win when Jalen Perdue intercepted Luke Wilson and took it back the distance. Unfortunately, a block in the back penalty would erase the touchdown. Unable to score again, the Marauders would have to go into overtime. They scored on a 27-yard Lucas Seaton field goal with the first OT possession to take a 52-49 lead. But Santa Ana would take the lead, and the win as Luke Wilson threw his fifth TD pass of the day to Joshua Rice from 25 yards out.
The Marauders (1-1) will take on LA Harbor in their home opener on Saturday at Marauder Stadium at 6:00 pm.
