LANCASTER - It was a tight game heading into the final inning when visiting Barstow put up five runs to extend its lead as it defeated the Marauder baseball team, 8-2, Thursday afternoon at Marauder Stadium in the Western State Conference opener for both teams.
The Vikings took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning when AVC chipped away by scoring a run in the bottom half of the inning following an RBI single by Gabriel Curtier that scored Joseph Cochran.
The Marauders (6-11, 0-1) held Barstow in check and cut into the lead even more with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning following an RBI groundout by John Serrato, again scoring Cochran.
AVC starter Andrew Garcia settled down after a shaky first two innings and the pitching was solid until the top of the ninth inning when the Vikings (5-11, 1-0) exploded for five runs to extend their lead.
Cochran was 2-for-3 with two triples and two runs scored.
